The major of French Language and Literature in East China Normal University was started in 1972 and then in 2006 it was changed into the French Department. In 2005, the postgraduate program in French Language and Literature was set up and started to enroll students in 2007. In 2011, the first-level doctoral program of foreign literature and the second-level doctoral program of French literature were established and started to enroll French Language and Literature PhD candidates in 2013. With good academic traditions, a solid disciplinary development system and reasonable curriculums, the Department has enjoyed a high reputation throughout the country.
There are currently 13 teachers in the French Department, including 2 professors, 2 associate professors and 10 teachers with doctoral degrees. Teachers here have published various textbooks, translations and monographs, and are influential figures in the French teaching and literature circles of the whole country. At present, there are about 180 undergraduates. The graduates are mainly employed in major French enterprises, joint ventures, universities and publishing houses, etc..
The main courses for undergraduates are Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, French Listening and Speaking, Grammar, Conversation, Writing, French-Chinese Translation, Chinese-French Translation, French Literature History, French Overview, Translation Theory and Practice, Literary Translation Review, Tourism French, Interpretation, Introduction to French Linguistics, and Thesis Writing. Postgraduate courses include French Literature History, 20th Century French Literature, Translation Theory, Literary Translation Review, History of French Literature Translation, Linguistic Introduction, Western Literary Theory (General Course), etc.
